Here's a question worth sitting with for a moment.

You've had your current car for two years. You take roughly the same route to work every morning. You brake a little harder than you should at that one intersection near the school. You stop at the same coffee place on Tuesdays. You listen to a specific playlist when you're stressed and something upbeat when you're in a good mood. You've parked outside your doctor's office four times in the past year.

Now ask yourself: who else knows all of that?

The answer, almost certainly, is your car. And unlike the people in your life who might observe your habits and then forget them, your car has been writing everything down.

The Machine That's Been Paying Attention

Modern cars are not transport anymore, in the pure sense of the word. They are data-collection platforms that happen to have wheels. This is not a conspiracy theory or a dramatic overstatement — it is a fairly literal description of what the major automakers have built over the past decade, as internet connectivity, sensors, and onboard processing power reached the point where tracking driver behaviour became not just possible but easy and continuous.

That's the baseline. The things your car almost certainly knows regardless of make or model, because those things are intrinsic to how connected vehicles operate.

But the depth goes considerably further.

<cite index="2-1">Ford, through its FordPass app, collects driving data, location information, and even your phone's contact list. Tesla's cars gather driving patterns, GPS details, and even audio from its always-on microphones inside the vehicle. General Motors, via the OnStar system, tracks vehicle speed, braking habits, and location. Toyota's Entune system logs navigation routes, music preferences, and smartphone interactions.</cite>

Music preferences. Smartphone interactions. Contact lists. The list of what gets collected has grown steadily and quietly, without most drivers ever having a conversation about it.

Your Driving Has a Fingerprint

There is a concept in automotive AI research called "driver fingerprinting," and it is as revealing as the name suggests.

<cite index="3-1">Every driver has their own driving style — acceleration, speed, braking habits — that vary from driver to driver and can be considered a fingerprint of the driver's manner. This fingerprint could lead to important privacy compromises.</cite>

What this means in practice is that the way you drive is as individually identifiable as your face or your voice. The specific rhythm of how you accelerate from a stop, the precise pressure you apply to the brakes, the angle at which you take corners, the following distance you prefer on a motorway — these micro-behaviours are consistent enough over time that an AI system can recognise you from them.

For example, a particular driver's pattern may indicate a preference for windy roads over straight roads, right turns over left turns, multi-lane highways over side roads. Your car doesn't just record what you do. It learns to predict what you're about to do before you do it. In the context of driver assistance systems, that's genuinely useful — it allows the vehicle to anticipate your lane change intent, your braking point, your comfort threshold for how close another car can be. But it also means the vehicle is building a model of you that becomes more accurate with every kilometre you drive.

Read that again. The AI is learning not just your actual behaviour but the gap between your actual behaviour and your self-perception. It is, in a meaningful sense, learning something about you that you don't fully know about yourself.

The Part Nobody Told You at the Dealership

In September 2023, the Mozilla Foundation — the organisation behind the Firefox browser and one of the more credible voices in digital privacy — published what it called the most comprehensive privacy assessment of car brands it had ever conducted.

<cite index="14-1">All 25 major car brands reviewed received failing marks for consumer privacy — a first in the buyer's guide's seven-year history. Popular global brands, including BMW, Ford, Toyota, Tesla, Kia, and Subaru, can collect deeply personal data including sexual activity, immigration status, race, facial expressions, weight, health and genetic information, and where you drive. Data is gathered by sensors, microphones, cameras, and the phones and devices drivers connect to their cars, as well as by car apps, company websites, dealerships, and vehicle telematics. Brands can then share or sell this data to third parties.</cite>

Twenty-five brands assessed. Twenty-five failing marks. Every single one of them.

<cite index="13-1">Mozilla's report lists more than 160 collectible data points across connected car brands. More than half of the car manufacturers analysed also collected information about the world outside the car, including weather and road surfaces.</cite>

One hundred and sixty data points. For context, a detailed credit report on you contains fewer.

<cite index="19-1">Mozilla found 21 of the 25 automakers say they may share customer information with service providers, data brokers, and the like. Nineteen of the 25 say they can sell personal data. More than half — 56 percent — also say they share customer information with the government or law enforcement in response to a "request," which isn't necessarily a court-ordered warrant but can be a more informal request.</cite>

The part about law enforcement responses to informal requests — not court orders, just requests — is one worth spending a moment with. Your car's GPS history could be shared with a government agency not because a judge said it could be but because someone asked.

The Nissan Intelligence Assessment

Some of what the Mozilla report uncovered crosses from unsettling into territory that is difficult to describe with neutral language.

<cite index="19-1">Nissan says it can infer how smart you are, then sell that assessment to third parties. "Why does a car company need to make an inference about my intelligence? It gets creepy really fast," said the Privacy Not Included programme director Jen Caltrider.</cite>

Nissan's privacy policy, at the time of Mozilla's research, stated that the company could collect and use data to develop profiles describing drivers' "preferences, characteristics, psychological trends, predispositions, behaviour, attitudes, intelligence, abilities, and aptitudes." That profile — which includes an AI-generated assessment of your intelligence — could then be sold.

Your car. Deciding how smart you are. Selling that conclusion to someone you've never met.

Ford, separately, filed a patent for a system that could repossess vehicles autonomously if payments were missed. The car would, under the patented system, be able to lock itself and drive itself to a collection point without any human involvement. The patent was filed — it has not been implemented as a product — but the fact that the engineering was considered and formally documented says something about where the line between personalisation and control is currently sitting.

Where Your Insurance Premium Really Comes From

The most immediate and financially tangible consequence of driver data collection for most people is insurance.

<cite index="4-1">Driving behaviour can suggest risk levels for insurance companies. A connected car can record hard braking, late-night driving, speeding, and other factors. Insurance companies may use driving data to offer discounts to careful drivers. But the same kind of data could also be used to increase premiums for people who brake hard, drive at night, or speed frequently.</cite>

This is happening now, not as a future scenario. A New York Times investigation in early 2024 found that insurance companies were receiving driving data from car manufacturers and using it to adjust premiums — in some cases without drivers being aware that their data had been shared. Car insurance rates in the United States increased by 24 percent in 2023, and researchers have identified data sharing as one of the contributing factors.

The driver who brakes hard at that one intersection near the school — the one at the beginning of this article — might be paying more for insurance because of it. The insurance company may have access to the data. The driver may not know.

The Useful Side of the Equation

It would be dishonest to describe all of this as purely concerning and leave out the legitimate value that AI learning in cars creates.

<cite index="8-1">As AI systems collect data on speed, steering input, and pedal pressure, they begin to build a behavioural profile that allows the vehicle to respond in ways that match habits and preferences. In some modern sports models, the car's AI observes thousands of data points and tweaks behaviour on the fly — optimising throttle response, torque distribution, and brake vectoring.</cite>

Predictive maintenance, one of the most practically valuable applications of driver data, uses AI to identify patterns that precede component failure before the failure occurs. <cite index="10-1">AI algorithms can anticipate when certain components are likely to fail based on driving behaviour, helping prevent costly repairs.</cite> A car that knows you ride the clutch, or brake late consistently, or have driven a particular suspension component hard for fifty thousand kilometres, can warn you before the part fails rather than after.

Adaptive systems that remember your preferred seat position, climate settings, driving mode, and even the type of music you listen to on commutes versus weekend drives create a version of the car that genuinely adjusts to you. That experience — of a machine that feels like it knows you — is real, and for many drivers it is genuinely valuable.

The question is not whether the technology has benefits. It clearly does. The question is who else benefits from the data that makes those features possible, and whether the people generating the data — the drivers — were ever meaningfully told or asked.

What You Can Actually Do

You cannot fully opt out of connected car data collection in most modern vehicles. The connectivity is built into the architecture, not layered on top of it. But there are meaningful steps available.

Most manufacturers offer a privacy settings menu in their connected car app or through their dealer. Reviewing and tightening those settings — disabling data sharing with third parties, opting out of telematics programs with insurance partners, turning off features you don't use — reduces the footprint meaningfully without eliminating it.

Before purchasing, checking the manufacturer's privacy policy for specific language about data selling and third-party sharing is worthwhile. The differences between brands are significant. Some companies offer genuine opt-out mechanisms; others bury consent in terms and conditions that are clicked through during the initial setup process and never revisited.

<cite index="16-1">Not a single car manufacturer in the Mozilla Foundation's study could confirm whether locally stored data in their vehicles was encrypted.</cite> Asking your dealer about encryption status and data deletion policies before purchase is a legitimate and increasingly important part of the buying decision.

The Car That Knows You

The idea that your car understands you better than some people in your life is not metaphor anymore. It is a fairly straightforward description of what the data models built on driver behaviour actually contain.

Your route patterns reveal where you live, where you work, where you receive medical care, and where you go at unusual hours. Your braking behaviour reveals your temperament under pressure. Your music choices and their correlation with time of day and driving pattern reveal your emotional states. Your parking history tells a detailed story about your life that you would probably not volunteer to a stranger.

All of this is being recorded. Much of it is being retained. Some of it is being sold.

The car that started as the most private space most people own — a sealed metal room where no one can overhear you, where you can think out loud, cry, sing badly, have difficult conversations — is now, quietly, one of the more comprehensive surveillance systems most people will ever willingly enter.

It learned that from you, too.
